Aluminum extrusion Process
The extrusion process for aluminum profiles, combined with the proper selection of alloy and temper, offers an infinite number of applications and product improvements. For example, Alloy 6063 offers corrosion-resistant extrusion profiles and an excellent finish.
Extrusion consists of shaping a cylindrical ingot of aluminum, known as a “billet”, by passing it through a specially arranged opening, called a “die”. This opening corresponds to the cross-section of the profile to be obtained. The most common method is direct extrusion, where the press pushes the billet through the die.
Once the billet is heated, a portion is cut and the material is introduced into the press at 500ºC, a temperature at which aluminum reaches a plastic state. In turn, the die is preheated so there is no difference in temperature with the material.
Once the aluminum begins to flow through the die, the tip is removed and the profile is accompanied by a carriage on the press until it reaches a length of approximately 50 m. Meanwhile, it is rapidly cooled, by air or water, at a rate of 50°C per minute.
Normally the profiles present slight curvatures and tensions that are corrected by stretching. Subsequently, the profiles are cut to the desired lengths. The extrusion process would continue with the thermal treatments of tempering and/or maturing. These processes consist of heating and cooling (in special ovens) at a certain temperature and for a certain period.
